This is a project of, by, and for the people of Greater Winter Haven designed to make our community a better place to live, to work and to play.

The project began during 1998 when a small group of citizens began meeting to discuss the problems facing the Greater Winter Haven area.

Since then, the project has grown to include more than 150 individuals representing every area of our community. Our races, genders, and ages are as diverse as the community we represent. Our strength comes from our common vision for our community and our determination to make it a reality.

The National Civic League of Denver, Colorado (NCL) coordinated our efforts. NCL is a nonprofit organization founded over a hundred years ago to help communities like ours develop solutions to their problems. NCL’s representative to our project was Derek Okubo.

While some of the original funding (about ten percent) came from government, the greatest portion was donated by citizens and businesses in the Greater Winter Haven area. Participation included elected officials from county, school board, and city government; however, most participants were people who have no connection with government but who care deeply about our community. We want to make Winter Haven a better place for our children, their children, and us.

The Winter Haven Vision Statement contained on this site is a reflection of every facet of our community. It is living and breathing and will guide us as we attempt to make the community an even better place to live.
